Downtown Seen August 2016: SLNA Canada Day Festivities

Dennis Hanagan –

On July 1, several hundred party-goers gathered at St. James Park to celebrate Canada Day presented by the St. Lawrence Neighborhood Association. The event featured live music and red and white maple leaf birthday cake. First Nations representative Thunder Jack drummed to remind Torontonians their city is on land that First Nations inhabited many centuries before Europeans arrived. A parade of St. Lawrence Neighbourhood residents, led by piper Robert Skinner, started the event. An unexpected addition to the event occurred when the cheerful sound of church bells, from St. James Cathedral, wafted across the park for a wedding taking place inside. The church held its own Canada Day celebrations on its Church St. side with live music and free hamburgers.
