Youth group targets drug awareness

By Brittney Daoust –

Scadding Court Community Centre has started a new youth-led drug awareness and healthy living youth group.

Project 1234 consists of young people, ages 15 to 18 from different schools, racial backgrounds, age groups, and genders.

The group, formed and led by youth with funding from Health Canada, plans to spread the word about the effect of drugs by visiting Toronto schools and community centres with activities and information about healthy living and substance use and abuse prevention for youth. In the early stages of the program, members are learning about nutrition and physical activity, substance use and prevention, project design, marketing, community engagement, research methods, writing a literature review, leadership and facilitation skills, conflict resolution, and peer education and mentoring.

Interested youth are invited to join the group, which meets on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. the community centre, which is located at 707 Dundas St. W. For information, contact lisa@scaddingcourt.org or phone (416) 392-0335 ext. 237.
