Wellesley pool project targets 2018 opening: three pools in one plan

Dennis Hanagan –

The design for a $17 million indoor pool has been unveiled for the Wellesley Community Centre. It’s actually three pools in one.

It’ll have a conversation pool, a 25-metre activity pool and a leisure pool. All three have ramp entrances for easy access.

The design, unveiled May 14 at a public meeting, is by the same architects who created the indoor pool at Regent Park’s new Aquatic Centre, MJM Architects.

Doug Giles, senior project co-ordinator with the parks department, said the next step is to work out design details then put out tenders for construction.

Construction is expected to start at the beginning of 2016. The pool will open to the public by late 2017 or early 2018.

It’ll be built on the centre’s Bleecker St. side using half of the existing grassed area. The rest will be left as green space.

The pool will have universal change room cubicles, a guard’s office and lockers. The leisure pool will have warm water where parents can swim with their small children.
