I loved my recent trip to Lisbon. The quaint streets and architecture called out to me. The people were all friendly (except for the person who robbed me). The fresh fish had a taste that was magnificent and those custard tarts wrecked havoc with my waistline. I visited some very wonderful restaurants. No where was I as satisfied as I am at my favorite Rush Hour.
Fernando, the proprietor, and his son Alex are so warm and friendly. They are also efficient and attentive. They look like brothers. Since Alex put in the earrings I can now tell them apart. I almost feel as if I am now part of their family. On this occasion I had a moment to chat with the chef and the sous chef while they were working in the kitchen. That is where the magic happens. The presentation of each dish is noteworthy. The food is superb. I actually crave going to Rush Hour.
The great assortment of wonderful Portuguese bread is a great starter. The homemade hummus is wonderful and that bottle of superior Portuguese olive oil is the best I have tasted. Dip good bread in fantastic olive oil and you have the beginning of a meal that is noteworthy.
I never look at a menu. I know I want the Grilled Tuna. It was a Tuesday evening and the fish had arrived fresh that day. It is cooked to perfection. The two large portions are sesame crusted and cooked the way I like it. I almost hated to start eating because the plate was picture perfect. I never eat potatoes at home. The little roasted potatoes were quickly devoured with much pleasure. Broccoli and carrots were cooked to still maintain a little crispness. I enjoyed every bite and almost felt sad when it was all finished.
My friend also shares my delight with Rush Hour. She had a whole Sea Bass that was cooked to her taste. It was presented without the head and the skin. Rush Hour has a good selection of fish and the chef knows how to prepare it. I was actually tempted to have the Swordfish on this occasion. It was one of the daily specials. A platter of fresh fish can be brought to the table so you can make your selection. This restaurant excels in the presentation and the preparation of the fish.
If you prefer meat you need go no further. Rush Hour ages their own variety of steaks. The Veal Chop is a large portion of well flavored meat. We noticed the Lamb Chops being delivered to the next table. It was a work of art. Friends of mine have enjoyed Chicken dishes on past visits.
Try and save room for the Tiramisu. I realize I keep repeating myself by stating this is the best. The tiramisu is served in a martini like glass. It is smooth and creamy. Don’t think calories. Think pleasure
It is getting harder to get a table here because it is always so busy. Do make a reservation. I love the fact that this superb restaurant is on a quiet part of Dufferin in a residential area. I also never find the restaurant too noisy. What a pleasure that is. Parking is easily available. You will feel like a king or queen and certainly be treated as such. I loved Portugal but in all of my meals I never had food as good as my dinner on this evening. I can’t wait to go back for more.
