Murray carries Toronto Centre for Liberals

Toronto Liberals celebrated their by-election victory during a packed reception at the Downtown Jack Astor’s restaurant at Yonge and Dundas square on the evening of Feb. 4th.

Premiere Dalton McGuinty was on hand to congratulate the winning candidate, Glen Murray, as was outgoing Toronto Centre MPP George Smitherman who has stepped down in order to run for Toronto Mayor.
Murray won the Toronto Centre Liberal stronghold with 47% of the vote. He defeated New Democrat candidate Cathy Crowe who came in second with 33% and Progressive Conservative Pamela Taylor with 15%.
That same night, at a rally at the nearby Ramada Hotel on Jarvis, NDP brass were on hand to throw their support behind their candidate, Cathy Crowe.  Federal MPs Jack Layton and Olivia Chow were in attendance, as well as Andrea Horwath, leader of the provincial NDP.
