M Square

Annabelle Goodman —

Don’t look on street level. Take The Path going south from The Bay. The Sheraton Hotel exits on this lower level. What a new find for The Path. M Square is barely a few weeks open and has already made its mark on the Fine Coffee circuit. You will never stop at one of those awful chains again. Once you have tasted a cup of coffee here you will be hooked. Several charming young men were in attendance. They were so willing to answer all my questions about their exquisite coffee. Timothy Houghton is the assistant manager who hails from Calgary. If I understood him correctly the coffee is roasted in Calgary. The coffee initially comes from all over the world. These baristas know what they are talking about. They feature different coffees at different times. That means you won’t be stuck with the same flavors on each visit. It is so exciting (and delicious) to sample new flavors and try coffee from different regions. Different types of coffee come from various countries. If you wish an Americano or a Latte you will discover the origin of the coffee may be very different.

My Macchiato was very special. It originally came from Guatemala and roasted in Calgary. It was full flavored but I detected a fruity note. I inquired about the flavor. I asked about the temperature and was given a full lesson on preparing that perfect cup of coffee. The gentlemen were kind enough to show me their state of the art equipment and explain all the buttons and their function. If a coffee is too hot you can burn the coffee and it will taste bitter. If the coffee is temperate in temperature you taste the flavor of the coffee, especially if a milk product is used.

The place is charming and very inviting. All the servers were very knowledgeable. Ask some questions. The dialog makes it all an exciting adventure into ‘coffee land.” The pastries also looked inviting.

In a joking manner I stated that all I required was a good piece of dark chocolate. Voila! A jar was opened and a delicious 70% piece of chocolate was melting on my tongue. It came from some far away country and tasted so wonderful on the palate. It is the chocolate used for Hot Chocolate.

This is not a coffee stand. It is the state of the art in fine coffee. Savor it! Welcome M Square to Toronto. They plan to have special events at M Square. There will be samplings and lessons on coffee. I can’t wait. In the meantime take yourself to The Path and follow ‘the yellow brick road’ for one of the finest coffee treats in town.

The baristas are such gentlemen that we even discussed some of their excellent competitors in town. The best coffee houses feature trained baristas who bring in a variety of the finest purest coffee. They also know how to use the coffee to make that perfect drink. It is like a fine glass of wine. You know when you drink it that the flavor is perfect on the palate. I commented after my coffee that the wonderful taste was lingering and felt so great. The lasting flavor made it even better.

Just for added information ‘barista’ comes from the Italian word ‘bartender.’ It is a person who is an employee who prepares and serves espresso based coffee.
