Lobbyists inspire ‘misleading’ city booklet for public consultations on Island jet plans—NoJetsTO

IslandAirportbookletGautam Malkani—The City of Toronto has just published a misleading pamphlet for the public consultation process for the Island Airport expansion plans that is full of bogus claims and omissions. NoJetsTO is rebuking the biased publication as the crucial public consultation process is about to begin.
“The City’s brochure for the public consultations reads like it was written by Deluce’s lobbyists,” NoJetsTO chair Anshul Kapoor said. “It’s a shame that the negative impacts on waterfront users and the environment are being omitted or denied.”
The poorly written City brochure stays silent on the impact on the waterfront as Toronto’s prime recreation and tourist destination. Among other claims, the booklet alleges that the planned 70% increase in passenger numbers will not affect Pearson Airport and that the runway extension will not impact lake users.
“Instead of informing the public, the misleading document talks about how to make jets on the waterfront possible,” Anshul Kapoor continued. “Downplaying major risks for the waterfront is appalling and unworthy of the City.”
The flawed booklet fails to serve as a guide for the public in identifying the main issues involved with airport expansion, rendering it useless for residents interested in the public consultation process.
“It is sad to see stakeholders from private pilots to boaters and conservationists let down by their City,” the NoJetsTO chair added. “NoJetsTO will continue to push for a fact–based report, not one that rolls out the red carpet for jets on the waterfront.”
NoJetsTO is a coalition of concerned citizens dedicated to preserving Toronto’s mixed-use waterfront and a boutique Island Airport. Representing residents and organizations across Toronto, NoJetsTO opposes the expansion of the Island Airport through jet aircraft and extended runways. NoJetsTO’s goal is to protect the current Tripartite Agreement that governs the Island Airport.
