Honest Weight

2766A Dundas St West (at Keele) 416-604 9992/9993

No fingers tipping the scale at this new fish emporium/ dining spot in the Junction area. Has this neighborhood ever changed! John Bll must be a bit of a rebel and I love it. For many years he was associated with Rodney’s Oyster Bar. The experience reflects itself in this new establishment in a newly reovated neighborhood. The wooden floors are so sparkling you could eat off them. The black and white mural on the wall is creative and so appropriate with the nautical theme. The tables were made from the former dentist’s cupboard doors. There is a small hole where the knobs used to be. Nautical pictures grace the wall. A counter with fresh fish will tempt you to take some home for another day.

Seven people work in Honest Weight. It is really obvious that everyone has a good time. When we entered I immediately noticed the large Pie on the counter, Strawberry and Apple. We were amazed to learn that Adam, a staffer at Honest Weight made this pie. I am going back for more of that delicious dessert. We ordered a piece before even giving our lunch order. Fortunately I was with my friend who craves a fun time. I have always wanted to start with dessert and she was backing me up. This was the first day for serving wine. We weren’t going to miss that opportunity. John has his own special wine and it was delicious. The pie satisfied our food cravings and the wine was fruity and dry and put us in a celebratory mood for the rest of the day. We were off to a good start.

The menu is limited but very inviting. The most popular item is the Fish Sandwich. A Rock Fish was perfectly cooked and placed inside a Vietnamese baguette with lettuce, a light mayonnaise and some cooked onions. It was a ‘spiritual experience’ to eat that fresh fish prepare so lovingly. The Shrimp dish was also tempting. Oysters were available and several other fish dishes. The menu changes regularly according to what fish is fresh and available. The coleslaw on the side was fresh and tasty

Jokingly I asked for a Macchiato to finish this fun gourmet experience. No problem. Kevin, our server, added so much to our enjoyable experience. He was a lot of fun and an efficient server. He actually made a superior Macchiato. It was served in a blue porcelain cup shaped like an egg cup with a handle. The coffee was a special blend for this store. Every bite and every sip was superb. Even the heavy rain pour stopped when we had completed everything on our plates.

We couldn’t help but notice the store across the road. The sign proudly claims this is Toronto’s Best Italian Sausage. A smoker on the street was busy doing its work. We had to investigate this further. The store is actually called Sorella. Mario Garsisto is a delightful fascinating gentleman who is the entrepreneur behind this business. He smokes all the Sausages. Chickens and Mushrooms can also be ordered. In fact he would love to prepare all the salads and smoked meat for your party

I keep promising myself I will try the Flo’s Mac and Cheese served with a mixed salad. I hesitate because I know it will be a healthy portion and filled with gooey yummy cheese. My heart is craving it but my waistline is holding me back.

My friend and I agreed we had just had the most fun in a long time. The food was superb. We dined the way we wanted to. They barely laughed at us when we ordered the pie to be eaten before the sandwich.

Check out Mario’s Sorella across the road. Mario claims he eats daily at Honest Weight and agreed the coffee is superior. The junction is an older part of the city. It is going through a great change. Become part of it by exploring these two outstanding spots on Dundas St West.
