Fonda Lola

Annabelle Goodman —

Me gusto mucho la comida Mexicana. I recently read a description of this new restaurant on trendy Queen St West, making the best Huevos Rancheros. That is my favorite Mexican food. It turns out they don’t serve those tasty eggs in the evening. I will just have to go back. Fonda Lola has been in operation for a year. Howard Dubrovsky and Andres Marquez have made this a winning operation. The food is authentic delicious. The ambiance is fiesta time. Andres was charming and energetic. He was also helpful with the menu. My suggestion is to order several dishes as they are not large in portion size. That way you can also share the wondrous flavors.

942 Queen St W (at Shaw) – 647 706 9105

My friend and I shared an order of Guacamole as a starter. The avocado mousse was original in flavor and topped with a salsa verde. The tacos also tasted homemade. It was unusual and delicious. The Hand Made Caesar Salad with Boston lettuce, avocado, Caesar mousse, candied jalapeno, bacon magic and Parmesan cheese was being enjoyed at the next table. Candied Jalapeno Bacon and Trout Aguachile were also popular choices of ‘Frio” selections (cold appetizers)

My dining companion ordered from the Caliente (hot) selections, Carne Asada Skillet. Flank steak, ancient raw mole, drunken salsa, tortillas made for a flavorful Mexican dinner. I suppose you could call it Fajitas but it was a ‘cut above.’

By mistake an order of Kale Tofu Taco arrived at our table. Before realizing we had not ordered it we began to devour what looked like frites. Crispy cornmeal tofu, avocado, chile mayo, pickled onions made for an unusual but most satisfying dish. It was labeled as ‘super healthy” Add tasty and satisfying. Make it part of your order.

The Quecas were served in fresh corn tortillas with that wonderful Oaxaca cheese, house made epazote requeson, pickled onions and jalapeno. I don’t know what all the ingredients are but it certainly didn’t matter. The combination was great. I added a little extra Salsa Verde to perfect what already was very special.

Fideos is a plate of picante angel hair pasta, chipotele, tomato sauce, abuela style. (grandma’s pasta) What could be bad about that?

This place was bursting with energy. There were families and young folk. All were in a festive mood. No wonder. Andres was scurrying around assisting everyone in making choices and promptly delivering this ‘comida deliciosa’. If you can’t get to Mexico in this cold weather you can do no better than savoring some of this amazing food. You will be in a holiday mood. Ole! Churros con Cajeta and Ata con Queso are traditional desserts offered on the menu. If you want a real Mexican fiesta you can order the #mexicanfiesta ample for 4 people for $150.00. The entire menu is a ‘roller coaster of emotions, flavors and textures.’ Enjoy it all!
