With recent newspaper headlines screaming about violent incidents in Toronto, Constable Joseph Smith from 51 Division stood in front of the depressing descriptions on June 23 and spoke to a gathering of residents from the Esplanade and Sherborne community addressing their concerns for the safety and security of this neighbourhood.

The meeting was held at the 176 community room and was standing room only as area residents outlined their concerns and relayed to Smith some of the violent indidents they had experienced in this community. Smith listened and offered many suggestions on how to best protect yourself when out and about on the streets.
He suggested not walking alone at night, always being aware of one’s surroundings and paying attention to activities surrounding you. He also encouraged residents to call the Toronto Police Services anytime they see an illegal activity anywhere in their community. A pamphlet titled “protect yourself” was distributed by Smith. This piece of literature listed many suggestions for keeping yourself safe outdoors, at home or work, on elevators, on the transit system and in your car.
The pamphlet also listed the action someone should take if ever assaulted. Smith stressed the importance of calling 911 for a situation which might be life threatening. If residents do witness an illegal activity they are encouraged to call Metropolitan Toronto Police at 416-808-2222.
