Brooklyn Tavern

Annabelle Goodman —

My friend and I have a mission to try new restaurants. Her daughter lives in the Leslieville area and highly recommended this spot. It is not fancy. It is not expensive. It is terrific. I loved the low key pleasant ambiance. The long bar was set up for late diners. This is obviously a neighborhood friendly restaurant. Many of the clients were greeted with hugs. We felt very much at home.

I wish I had thought to ask for the server’s name. He was outstanding. I had checked the menu on the web and was anticipating Huevos Rancheros. Lately the restaurant has decided to be open for dinner only. The Rancheros were a lunch item. Our darling server said he would ask the kitchen. I was ‘over the moon’ because that was just what I fancied. The soft tortilla shell had the most delicious black beans. They were firm and nicely flavored. Two perfectly poached eggs sat on a light tomato sauce on the tortilla. Slices of fresh avocado enhanced it all. I devoured the dish with great gusto. It is possibly the cheapest dinner I have eaten in a long while but one of the best.

My friend was impressed with the special offering of a Brooklym Brisket Burger. The meat was ground in house. It was a large thick burger on a lovely sesame bun. Apparently the fries were crispy and hot. Homemade ketchup added to the flavor. It was a winning dish.

If the kitchen was unable to make my special order I was interested in the Special Salad of Fresh Tomatoes and Bocconcini Cheese. Apparently it is a dinner size portion and was most appealing. The Aged Cheddar Mac and Cheese with an olive oil panko crust will certainly bring me back on a cold day. Ancho and Guajillo Pepper Vegetarian Chile with a queso fresco was also calling out.

Liver was the special meat offering on this evening. Grilled Skirt Steak Salad with fingerling potatoes and arugula   is served with roast garlic vinaigrette. Roast Chicken with creamy cauliflower and grilled bok choy is a regular menu item. Miami Short Ribs and Tavern Slaw are listed as a starter. Order a few starters for a hearty meal or select one for a lighter fare dining experience. Every Sunday a Black Angus Brisket Pot Roast Dinner is served from 5:00 pm.

The food was terrific. We loved the facility. Our server was so attentive. I was trying to remember a certain author. He so kindly went to the back and researched the answer on the computer. What a darling! It has been a long time since I have seen such reasonable prices for such delicious food. The wine listings were extensive and also reasonable.

Will I go back? The question is how soon?
