The city of Toronto unveiled a new bike locker location at the Toronto ferry docks on Feb. 22. Ted Tyndorf, chief planner and executive director of city planning, was on hand to cut the ribbon.

The city’s bicycle locker project provides secure parking at various sites around Toronto, with future locations planned near public transportation stations.

Says Pauline Craig, cycling and transit organizer, “These could be used by people who live on the island, or people who work in this area that would like a secure place to park their bikes. There is a unique key and unique lock for every locker, so it’s high security, and we do routine inspections of each locker to make sure that it’s only bicycles that are stored in there.”

At a cost of ten dollars per month, the lockers offer protection from theft, vandalism and inclement weather, beyond what would be provided by a conventional bicycle rack.

The first cluster of lockers will accommodate eight bicycles. Although these lockers have already been assigned, more units are planned for this location. Riders may reserve a unit by signing on to a waiting list
