Threatened Berkeley St. stables win heritage designation

Toronto’s Preservation Board approved a motion in March to designate 93-95 Berkeley St. under the Ontario Heritage Act to ensure its front portion is conserved in a condo development.

The proposal from Signature Communities requires a zoning bylaw amendment for a 21-storey mixed-use building containing retail and office space and 280 residential units. It would have a 3-level underground garage with 155 parking spaces.

The east side of the development would front on Parliament St.

The city’s heritage preservation services says the former Christie, Brown & Co. stables (1906) at 93-95 Berkeley is an example of Beaux Arts stylistic elements. Berkeley, originally known as Parliament St., was the eastern boundary of the 10-block grid when York was laid out in 1793.
