These “losers” have something to brag about

By Susan De Rosa –

Yes, the members of this group are all proud of losing… losing weight, that is.

A new local support group has sprung up in the St Lawrence Neighbourhood–the St Lawrence Losers. Here, in Toronto’s best fresh market and fine dining area, these spirited neighbours help each other make culinary choices that are both delicious and nutritious.

Drop by one of their weekly Wednesday evening meetings and you will find friendly, dynamic, and intelligent neighbours who are supporting each other in their efforts to improve their health through weight loss.

Theirs is not a one-size- fits-all program. What distinguishes this group is the freedom to make dietary decisions according to one’s own nutritional needs and belief system.

Presentations are animated, sharing insights about issues such as “emotional eating” and “portion control,” while discussions provide encouragement in setting weekly personal goals and meeting ongoing nutritional challenges.

Founded by community stalwart Dorothy Creaser, St Lawrence Losers meet at Old York Tower (85 The Esplanade). Fees for this not-for-profit group are kept minimal ($2 per week and only $10 to join) to cover the basic costs.

“What works for me is this wonderful atmosphere of support that bolsters our own efforts to get on with our lives in a healthy and active manner,” said one enthusiastic member. “This group is what the St Lawrence Neighbourhood is all about.”
