How to save on energy costs

Money-saving strategies to save money on your electricity, oil and/or natural-gas bills

  • Crank down your thermostat and keep warm using sweaters, socks, long pants, and slippers instead. This could save you as much as four percent on your heating bill.
  • Save your hard earned money and bring the LEDs out! LED lightbulbs can reduce energy consumption by 80 to 90 per cent and can last up to 25 percent longer.
  • Take advantage of the latest technology and install a programmable thermostat. The Nest Learning Thermostat, for example, automatically adapts as your life and seasons change. It keeps you cozy in the afternoon and cool at night.
  • Allow sunlight to naturally heat up your home by opening your drapes and blinds on bright sunny days. Close them back up at night to reduce the cold air coming in your home.
  • Find air leaks either on your own or with the help of a professional. Feel around doors and window frames and once you’ve found them, seal them up by caulking or weatherstripping.
  • Stop the energy vampires by unplugging your devices when they are not in use. Can’t get your kids to comply? Consider a Tier 1 Advanced PowerStrip which saves energy by reducing the amount of standby power wasted in your home!
  • Finally, the oldest trick in the book—turn off your lights as you leave the room
