Ryerson housing gets planning nod

Dennis Hanagan –

A private 30-storey student residence for 186-188 Jarvis Street south of Dundas to benefit Ryerson University received approval from Toronto and East York Community Council at its August meeting.

Meanwhile, the university is proposing a 29-storey building with 100 student residences for 270-288 Church St. north of Dundas. A community consultation meeting is being scheduled for that.

The Jarvis building would have 191 units providing 593 beds. Commercial space is slated for the ground floor. A city-owned laneway between the properties will need to be purchased before a building permit is issued.

The city will receive funding under Section 37 of the Planning Act for community improvements. Included in that is $145,200 for improvements to Toronto Community Housing, $250,000 for offsite city-owned laneway upgrading, $250,000 for parkland and streetscape improvements and $806,800 to construct new affordable rental housing in Ward 27.
