Pensions Critic Murray Rankin to campaign for retirement security in Toronto Centre.

New Democrats will build on the Canada Pension Plans by increasing monthly benefits so Canadians can retire with dignity.

“Eleven million Canadians have no workplace pension anymore — and as life gets more expensive, most families simply can’t save enough,” said Rankin. “Seniors in Toronto Centre can count on Linda McQuaig and the NDP team to strengthen their CPP.”

“We need to increase CPP benefits, so that every Canadian can retire with dignity. We need to help young people save and invest for their retirement with pension plans that can be transferred from job to job,” said McQuaig. “Liberals and Conservatives oppose these practical solutions – but I will fight to improve pensions for people in Toronto Centre.”

Conservatives are slashing $11 billion from Old Age Security by raising the retirement age to 67. Combined with the enormous cuts under Liberal governments, seniors across Canada will lose $26 billion in retirement income by 2030.

“Liberals and Conservatives keep telling our seniors they have no choice – they have to cut back and our children have to settle for less,” said McQuaig. “But you have another choice. In this by-election you can vote for the progressive change you want – and actually get it.”
