Legal experts mark Black History Month with advocacy debate

On Feb. 7, a panel of experts will consider how community advocacy through law, education, business and culture promote social justice and equal opportunities for Black communities in Canada.

The event, co-hosted by the Law Society and the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers, starts with a panel discussion at 5:30 p.m. at the Lamont Learning Centre at the Law Society of Upper Canada, 130 Queen St. W., moving to Convocation Hall at 7 p.m. for a reception.

It will feature an excerpt from Home Again, a film that debuted at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. Filmmakers Sudz Sutherland and Jennifer Holness will participate in a panel discussion moderated by lawyer Kikélola Roach.

Other panelists include Dr. Gervan Fearon, dean of the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education at Ryerson University, Belinda Longe, principal of  Corvette Junior Public School, and D. Alissa Trotz, director of Caribbean studies at the New College of the University of Toronto.
