King West area art school announces major gifts from CTV, Rogers

The Toronto School of Art announced two corporate gifts from major corporations at its Christmas open house event on Dec. 14. Over 400 students gathered to view new works on display throughout the school.  Students, faculty and friends of TSA were delighted to learn of these exciting new partnerships.

“This is an exciting opportunity for TSA,” says Mary Kainer, president of the board of TSA. “This is the first time our school has received the attention of major corporations such as CTV and Rogers. The gifts valued at $10,000 each plus advertising support will be directed towards specific programs that will enhance our outreach and offer more opportunities for students to develop their work.”

CTV’s contribution is directed towards the Independent Studies Program. A one year certificate program eligible for graduates of a BFA or visual arts program. Known as ISP, it serves as a transition for artists from formal studies to private practice. TSA is also launching a new three-month summer residency program in May 2007.

Rogers will be supporting the Digital Art Lab program. Expanding its existing program more courses will be offered integrating studio art courses in painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking and collage with digital technology.

The Digital Art Lab program offers students a one-year certificate or individual courses  in our Mac-based computer lab. Students learn the Adobe programs of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign programs enhancing their artwork on computer. Additional courses are offered in Painter IX, web art, digital photo, digital documentation, video art and Final Cut Pro.

In operation for 37 years, the Toronto School of Art has been the longest-running alternative art school in the city. Four certificate programs are available: a diploma program, a one-year portfolio development program, an eight-month post-studies independent studies program, and a one-year digital art certificate. A youth studio program is also offered for ages 15 – 19 throughout the year. Short-term courses are also available in the summer, as well as weekend workshops in digital photo and MAC basics.
