jacMartine and Jacque will be young forever. I told Martine today she looks younger than ever. Martine greets and serves the patrons at this charming authentic Yorkville French restaurant. Of course other servers also assist in serving the food and making the clients feel welcome. When one of my dining party mentioned she is lactose intolerant, Martine assured her this was not a problem and she could accommodate her dining requirements.

For over 30 years Jacques has labored (in love) in that tiny kitchen performing miracles. Lunch and dinner. Nothing stops him. Each time I visit it is as if for the first time he was preparing that gourmet food so artistically presented. He always has time to wave. No wonder there is never an empty table. Do make a reservation.

Family was visiting from Vancouver. They know this restaurant from past experiences and it made for a lovely reunion in more ways than one.

Soupe a l’Oignon Gratinee is an experience in itself. It is a filling bowl of the tastiest broth filled with melted cheese and bread. ($9.25) You don’t need anything else after devouring a bowl of that wondrous flavor. On many occasions I have opted for one of Les Salades. They are fresh, crisp and so flavorful. Salade d’ Epinards is prepared with spinach, bacon, sliced mushrooms and cheese. ($9.25) The vinaigrette is homemade and so delicious. Salade Nicoise ($19.00) is often my choice. The baby potatoes, green beans, olives and fresh greens are topped with a perfectly poached breast of salmon. In the evening I like to order the Saumon Frais de l’ Atlantique au Basilic. ($25.25) It can be ordered poached or grilled and served with a basil butter sauce. The cooked prepared vegetables are still crisp and full of flavor.  On a few occasions I have asked for a Vegetarian Plate because I love the way they are cooked and presented. Le Carre d’ Agneau a la Provencale is always my daughter-in-law’s choice because it is so great. ($33.25) The roasted rack of lamb is covered with Dijon mustard, bread crumbs and garlic.

jac1When I come for lunch I think Omelettes. There are 10 choices of perfectly cooked omelettes. My favorite is Nicoise with tomatoes, cheese, onions, green peppers and eggplant. ($18.95) The roasted cubes of potatoes and cooked vegetables make this a great lunch choice. You don’t need to even think about dinner after enjoying this meal. The lactose intolerant guest was kindly treated to a Spinach and Mushroom Omelette without any cheese and cooked with oil rather than butter. No problem. Asperges et Fromage is a flavorful option. I think I will try the Crevettes a l’ ail the next time. Shrimp and garlic is a great combination. ($19.95)

Don’t even think about leaving without at least one Dessert to share. The Lemon Tarte is exquisite. Gateau St Honore is a gourmet dining experience. Make sure you reserve your portion before you even sit down. It is all prepared somehow on the premises. My Macchiato was the best and a great way to conclude a perfect luncheon.

I don’t know how they continue to charm the clients with exquisite food and a warm authentic French atmosphere. I have been going here for 30 years. Every time I return I feel as if I have made a new discovery.
