March Break Discovery Camp – Ages 7 to 10

Children will discover and build Victorian gadgets, explore and map High Park and create an installation in the house.  In the historic kitchen children will cook tasty Victorian treats and invent their own cookie creations. $190 for the week. Family Tours during March Break

Join us for a tour of the historic house which includes a special children’s activity. Make it a day in High Park for you and your family! The Lodge is located close to both the Jamie Bell Adventure Playground and the High Park Zoo. Regular admission applies.

High Park Easter Egg Hunt 

Sunday, March 20 (a week before Easter), 11 to 3 pm

The annual Easter Egg Hunt in High Park – this year on the grounds of Colborne Lodge Museum.  Outdoor egg hunts for children are scheduled every 30 minutes starting at 11 am – the last hunt at 3:00 p.m.  Other activities include – dyeing eggs with natural dyes in the historic kitchens, making bunny-themed crafts, face painting, explorations of Colborne Lodge and a visit from the our friend the Bunny. Small fees apply for some activities.

Historic Cooking Classes at Fort York

The Historic Foodways Program promotes culinary history through the animation of the historic kitchens at Fort York and through the sharing of period foods and recipes. This unique program relies on educated volunteers and staff.

Looking for a day of adventure during March Break? Just bring your family down to Fort York National Historic Site! At this authentic War of 1812 fort, children will have fun trying soldiers’ drill classes, officers’ sword drill, and dressing up in costumes. Visitors can sample treats from the 1826 historic kitchen as they visit the fully restored Officers’ Mess. Learn about the Fort’s exciting history through colorful exhibits. Pick up a Kids’ Guide to Fort York and have fun finding the clues to complete its games and puzzles throughout their tour. Audio tours are available in our Museum Store where you can browse a wide selection of items for all ages. No registration required. Spotlight on the Collection Exhibit

Have you ever wondered about museum objects that are not on display? Our Spotlight exhibit will showcase interesting and rarely seen objects from the Gibson House collection.  Gibson family objects that fall outside of the scope and time period of the historic house will also be featured. Included with regular admission.

Become a heritage chef by cooking a full heritage meal over the historic hearth.  Learn how Mrs. Gibson would have cooked by making and sampling heritage recipes. Campers also make heritage inspired crafts and play games. Pre-registration and pre-payment required.  Hearth-cooked lunch included. $30 plus tax per child per day. Extended care available 8 to 9 a.m. and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Add $10 plus tax for morning OR afternoon; $15 plus tax for both. During March Break the museum will be offering tastes of 1850-inspired cooking to visitors.

Kids learn to cook in a fun & safe environment! Participants will learn about food from farm to table as they meet a farmer, attend the on-site farmers market (Wednesday only), or plant their own seedlings. Age appropriate hands-on cooking projects may include cake decorating and baking bread in a brick oven. Plenty of active play ensures that everyone works up a healthy appetite! April 10         This weekend marks the 178th anniversary of the executions of Samuel Lount and Peter Matthews, friends of Mackenzie, for their participation in the 1837 Rebellion.  Print a copy of the Proclamation that offered £500 for Lount and Matthews and £1000 for Mackenzie.

April 17         Choose an image from our collection and print a post card as a souvenir of your visit.

April 24         Using the 1845 press, print a poster you design.

Tunnel Vision: The Story of Toronto’s Subway

An exhibition of photographs, maps, plans and artifacts

Presented in partnership with the Toronto Transportation Society, this exhibit uses photographs, maps and artifacts to examine the complexity and massive scale of the subway’s operation. Toronto’s subway is much more than a few lines on a map or a list of numbers on a spreadsheet.  Every day for over 60 years, it has been the backbone of this city and has moved billions of passengers. The exhibit focuses on the enormous effort that it takes to keep the subway rolling, enabling visitors to better appreciate the vital role played by rapid transit.

This exhibit invites you to reflect on your own experiences and asks the question: how will you, and the women in your life, change our city moving forward?
