I was lunching with a long standing friend dating back to my first teaching assignment. We still keep in touch and frequently get together. Both of us have fond memories of dining at Bar Mercurio over the years. I recall taking my grandson, Alex, to this popular Annex spot on Wednesdays for lunch. He was at UTS and had 40 minutes for lunch. I previously ordered his Marguerita Pizza and it was waiting for him when he arrived. This is a popular spot with the professors at OISE and business people in the neighborhood. It is always full and a reservation is necessary.

The Omelettes are always a gourmet delight. On this occasion my friend opted for the Affumicata.  Smoked Salmon and dill chive made for a delicious lunch. ($14.00) Seasonal vegetables or salad is part of the reasonable deal. I always maintain that omelettes are difficult to prepare. Most chefs overcook them and a rubbery egg is not a delight. Guaranteed Bar Mercurio prepares a fluffy tasty omelette. Pollo Omelette is prepared with a house smoked capon, basil and cheddar. ($14.00)

I enjoyed the most delicious Quinoa & Grilled Tiger Shrimp Salad. ($9.00 sm. or $12.00 lge.) The quinoa was fluffy and moist with very tasty vinaigrette. The avocado added such a perfect balance to the tasty shrimp and the quinoa. I couldn’t believe the portion size. I can eat a lot but there was a lot left even if it was outstanding. I knew the guest at the next table. She was enjoying the Watercress Salad with Sea Scallops. The house anchovy dressing was apparently exquisite. She was most happy with her choice.

The Pizzas are always with a thin crust and flavorful toppings. Pizze Noce is prepared with a walnut puree, pomodoro, Pecorino Romano, and mozzarella. Porcini mushrooms are freely scattered on top with basil and EVOO. ($17.00) There are many choices for the pizzas and I do recommend it.

Pasta is also a house specialty. This is a family run operation. Years ago ‘Nona’ made all the sauces and was busy in the kitchen. How does she do it? Today she is still at the front of the restaurant greeting the clients. I told her she is getting younger every year. She has so much energy. Usually son Guiseppe or daughter Teresa is in charge. Gnocchi Gorgonzola is prepared with a house made ricotta, spinach and a spinach gorgonzola sauce.  Fettucine ai Funghi is prepared with assorted forest mushrooms, truffle infusion and Parmigiano. ($16.00)

The fresh fish of the day was Halibut. I certainly did give it some consideration. The fish was coated with crushed nuts. Pasta or salad is included. The home fries are always a treat. ($19.00)

We had the pleasure of being served by Andrea and Hailey. Both were so sweet and attentive. They were kept busy but always had a smile and were efficient. Good service adds so much to a fine dining experience. I have been coming here for many years. The standard is always maintained. The food is always extraordinary. L’Espresso Bar Mercurio is a less formal restaurant across the road. The salads and sandwiches are fantastic. The counter with all the tasty desserts will beckon to you. The coffee is always of superior quality. A great dining experience!
