A special remembrance: Mike Comstock

Final goodbye to a dearly departed took place at the HotHouse Café Nov. 10, 2012. There was music: ‘All we need is music, sweet music, There’ll be music everywhere, There’ll be swingin’, swayin’ and records playin’ And dancin’ in the street, yeah’

Comstock for column

Mike Comstock was my friend and he is sorely missed. (He died Sept. 22, 2012) You can see his columns in The Bulletin in another section of this website.

He was a practical guy, full of workable ideas. Mike was a fountainhead of practical solutions to practical problems.

Mike gave generously of his time and talents on behalf of the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood community and businesses, and through TABIA, the whole Downtown business scene.

If there was a job to be done that required perseverance, strong common sense and a volunteer spirit, Mike was quite often the volunteer.

Mike was always busy.

He loved life and he loved his family. He also loved his community and his friends.

Toward the end of his life, Mike took the fact of his imminent departure with the same pragmatic acknowledgement as if it were already a rather neutral event long past.

We were in his apartment. He was on the sofa with his back to Adelaide Street from several stories above. He was his own ghost, relating his own departure to those of us in the room, both seen and unseen.

Keep busy, Mike.

We will all meet again.
