Recent reports from the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario found students in lower income neighbourhoods are less likely to apply to university than those where household incomes top $75K. Couple that with a lack of expectations, and a “that’s all they’ll ever amount to” attitude and we have the recipe for social unrest.
The youth that the 51 Division Community Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) have had the opportunity to dialogue with illustrate this with a desperate acceptance that “this is all we have,” a reinforced belief in a perceived lack of options creating their realities.
The 51 Division CPLC has high expectations of the youth of our Division. And we would like to offer them a chance to dream outside any imagined box with a little known George Brown College (GBC) bridging scholarship for at-risk youth, courtesy of our first annual Building Bridges scholarship fundraiser and cocktail reception gala being held on Nov. 19 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at St. Lawrence Hall.
Community support for the event comes from businesses, neighbourhood associations to politicians and local film productions. The evening will be hosted by CityTV, with food by Jamie Kennedy, and a fashion show by GBC featuring the “Fabulous 51-ers.”
The Bulletin’s history columnist Bruce Bell and numerous surprise celebrity guests promise to make this gala a night to remember! Tickets are $50 and are available from Sgt. Chiu at (416) 808-5119.
