Painting the city red… and blue… and green

By Shawn Tracy —

paintingDowntown just got a shot of colour! The Bay Corridor Community Association (BCCA) has spearheaded a community-based project designed to bring art directly to the streets. With funds from a City of Toronto “Clean and Beautiful City” grant, a total of eight Bell Canada utility boxes have been beautifully transformed with colourful murals. The boxes are located in the general area bordered by Bay, Church, Bloor, and College Streets—try to see how many you can find!

On Sept. 28, local residents celebrated the success of the project with Mayor David Miller who took part in an official unveiling of the mural painted by local artist Lee Sjostrom (see photo). The other participating artists included Michael Cavanaugh, Sima Tajdini, Lindsay Veh, Patrice Stephens-Bourgeault, Michael Kupka, Rick Barnsley, and Dan Buckley—all of whom are volunteers at 6 St. Joseph House, a creative resource centre offering daily programs in art, wellness, community, and life skills. The BCCA extends project partners: City of Toronto, 6 St. Joseph House, Bell Canada, Benjamin Moore Paints, and Goodbye Graffiti.
