Former stable added to heritage lists

Berkeley photoCity council will hear a recommendation to have a 108-year-old building on Berkeley St. in the St. Lawrence Neghbourhood included in Toronto’s inventory of heritage buildings.

The call comes in the wake of preliminary discussions regarding the potential redevelopment of 93-95 Berkeley St., a 2-storey red brick structure north of Adelaide St. E. It was once home to Christie, Brown & Co. stables.

The Toronto Preservation Board made the recommendation that was approved by community council in February.

The Christie, Brown & Co. factory, established in 1872 at Frederick and Duke streets (now Adelaide St. E.), was just a few blocks to the west.

Berkeley St. “has a significant history dating back to the original plan for the Town of York in 1793 and the buildings, which continue to survive from various periods of that history, contribute to the understanding of its growth and change,” a report to community council said.

Christie, Brown & Co. was founded in 1868 by William Mercer Christie who arrived in Canada in 1848 at age 19. He apprenticed as a baker in his birthplace of Scotland.
