VPN for business and personal use in Canada

After discussing some issues related to secure connection and anonymous access to the Internet, some users sent their messages asking us to explain in simple form why they need a VPN in Canada and what it is.

What is VPN?

To begin with, the abbreviation VPN stands for virtual private network. That is, it is a separate secure network or a tunnel inside an unprotected Internet network. I propose to consider the Canada VPN technology on an imaginary model. We suppose that you decide to give secure remote access to freelancers to work with certain resources of your office’s internal network. You can create such conditions in three ways: Build your own channel using twisted pair, fiber or wireless technologies, but this method is acceptable only for small distances of several hundred meters.

You can buy or rent a channel from the provider. In this case, the provider provides VPN with direct fiber, L2-VPN or L3-VPN (service / virtual private network service). This offer works for an unlimited distance, but in the coverage area of the provider. The price policy is directly affected by the distance you need.

The third option allows you to use the VPN tunnel wherever there is access to the Internet. This is achieved through the GRE network packet tunneling protocol or a set of protocols that protect IPSec data. Since the third option is very convenient, it is used in most cases and it will be discussed further.

First of all, we need to say about the advantages of VPN and mention why such protection is used. The first and very important point is that this technology allows you to encrypt the transmitted traffic between clients on the Internet using a VPN server. In addition, the technology allows you to hide your current IP address and stay on the network anonymously, access another network or download a file from a site where IP addresses from Canada are prohibited.

Why do Canadians need to use VPN?

That is, using a VPN you for yourself removes all restrictions in another country and you will get access to sites, services, ports and protocols. Today, open Wi-Fi zones are very popular in the streets of the city, in cafes and hotels where you can connect to a wireless network from your laptop or smartphone and check mail, make a purchase or use your social network account. However, using an open and unprotected network without VPN is not safe, because in this case you are constantly at risk of losing passwords or sensitive data by intercepting unprotected traffic by third parties.

An ordinary user can survive without VPN if there’s enough luck and there is nothing to hide, but the online business can not do without VPN. We just considered the use of VPN from the perspective of a proxy, so I will continue to talk about the internal secure network of the company and the principle of VPN operation on the example of the office.

How does the VPN connection work? So, we figured out why we need a VPN, now let’s talk about how it works. Imagine that we have an internal network in the main office with a server to which computers are connected, and branches and freelancers are located in other cities. To provide access to the necessary data to remote employees and at the same time to protect data transmission over the Internet, an additional VPN server is installed inside the main office and connected to the main server.

Between the remote employee and the main office on top of the unprotected Internet network, a VPN tunnel is created. For example, in a simple version, the tunnel is a VPN client that is installed on the employee’s computer and a VPN server installed in the office. Now the remote worker can log in to the VPN server via the Internet and get access to the information provided. In this case, the transmission of data inside the tunnel will be protected by encryption and the transmitted and received information will be reliably protected from unauthorized persons.
