Riverdale Historical Society September Event

“The Chinese in Toronto” – a presentation by Arlene Chan.

After the completion of the CPR railway in 1885, a hostile British Columbia sent Chinese labourers eastwards in search of employment and a more welcoming place.  In 1894, the Chinese population in Toronto numbered 50.  Today, no less than half a million Chinese live in the Greater Toronto Area.

With a focus on Chinatown East at Broadview and Gerrard, Arlene will show archival photographs from her books, “The Chinese Community in Toronto: Then and Now” and “The Chinese in Toronto from 1878: From Outside to Inside the Circle”, which was nominated for the 2013 Heritage Toronto Book Award and 2014 Ontario Speaker’s Book Award.
